Protesters in Honduras torched and looted about 30 Dole Food Company BB #:124463 containers over the weekend, in the latest attack on U.S. property in the country.
According to Reuters, “protests against U.S.-allied Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez have been building in recent weeks over planned reforms that Hernandez’s critics argue will lead to the privatization of public services.”
William Goldfield, director, corporate communications, said “Dole is extremely concerned with the political and social unrest Honduras is facing and the impact it’s having on our equipment, operations, and those in our supply chain in country. Despite business disruptions, the company remains committed to Honduras, our workers and our banana and pineapple operations that exist there and hopes for a speedy and peaceful resolution. We hope to be able to resume daily operations as soon as we are resolved that our employees and assets are secured and protected.”
The Dole attack occurred in rural Honduras in the village known as Guadalupe Carney, about 200 miles from the capital, Tegucigalpa.
The protesters burned a gate to the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa May 31.
