A few years back, I remember a Google Trends data dump showing that “How to Cut a Mango” was the No. 1 food-related how-to video on YouTube.
That tells you something about mangos, and the growth of mango consumption, especially in the U.S. In fact, mango consumption hit a record 3.25 pounds per capita in the U.S. last year, according to the National Mango Board. Consumption has been growing rapidly, up from 1.75 pounds per capita in 2000.
I’ve seen ridiculous videos of consumers trying to figure out mangos. Epicurious did a hilarious — and infuriating one — back in 2017. Fifty people who I swear must be infomercial actors tried their hand at this culinary mystery.
But does it matter how you cut a mango? Do you have to have perfect slices or chunks to enjoy it? Absolutely not.
It’s September, and that means it is big-as-your-face (keitt) mango season, so I pulled out a throwback video from last year where I dragged my boys into the kitchen to show that you, too, can do it yourself.
Even my 5.5-year-old can cut a mango, and he did it with a butter knife, thanks to the extra squishy (but amazingly delicious) clearance piece of fruit I picked up at H-E-B.
