Steineke at Holtzinger Fruit explains, “We’re always looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint. In the last three years, we reworked the lighting of our entire plant to reduce electrical consumption by 25 percent; replaced our boiler system for processed water to cut natural gas consumption by 30 percent; and replaced the control system in our cold storage facility to reduce electrical consumption by 20 percent.”

Seeds For Thought
Despite the occasional hiccups of growing and shipping apples, those in the business look forward to a productive and profitable year. From new varieties to the continuing momentum of the buy-local movement, apples are a mainstay of the American diet, with plenty of producers nationwide and in nearby Canada to support consumption.
