Today the market also includes a 14,400 square foot retail sales building and a 10,000 square foot drive-through farmer/trucker shed. “Produce and plants are our top commodities,” says Ardona Summerall, the market’s manager. Seasonally, he notes, “the market is a good place to find fresh, local produce that hasn’t traveled far to get here.”

South Carolina State Farmers Market, West Columbia, SC
The South Carolina State Farmers Market moved to a brand new, state-of-the-art facility in 2012. Located in West Columbia near I-26 and I-77, the new market houses the Phillips Market Center, privately owned wholesale businesses, farmer sheds, a restaurant, and additional state-managed facilities and sheds.

Elise N. Wilson, owner of Pal-Agri Company, LLC, says there are some definite advantages to doing business on this large, brand new market. “It’s the only terminal market in the state, and there’s a camaraderie among vendors,” she explains. Wilson says some of the top commodities sold at market include California vegetables, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, collards, cabbage, onions, citrus, melons, grapes, apples, and pears.

Local and Locale
Although the Carolinas have a relatively short growing season (from about April to October), produce professionals in these two states enjoy some valuable benefits. “There are many advantages to doing business here, the big one being easy access to locally grown produce,” says Josh Taylor, president of Taylor Boys Produce, Inc., in Enoree, SC. “From the coast to the Midlands to Upstate, there’s a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables grown here such as fresh corn, vine-ripened tomatoes, green beans, different varieties of peppers, cucumbers, watermelons, cantaloupes, a variety of greens and even kiwi.”
