Se estima que se consumieron 8 millones de libras de guacamole en el die del Super Bowl el domingo de este año, y la mayoría de ellas provino de México, ya que tiene un bastión en el mercado del aguacate en los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, otro país latino está estableciendo nuevos récords en la exportación de aguacate.
Según la Cámara de Comercio de Lima, la exportación de aguacates peruanos creció 26% en 2018 para establecer un récord de $800 millones. En términos comparativos, en 2008 las exportaciones de aguacate peruano ascendieron a solo $84.4 millones.
Los aguacates se enviaron a 35 destinos diferentes, los tres primeros fueron Holanda $275 millones, los EE.UU. $191 millones y España con $111 millones. Además de comenzar a exportar a 10 nuevos mercados desde 2008.
Las expectativas serán similares en 2019 para Perú, que el año pasado exportó 335,000 toneladas de aguacate Hass durante su temporada, que generalmente se extiende desde el Día de los Caídos hasta el Día del Trabajo.
Otras dos menciones notables dentro de América Latina son Colombia y la República Dominicana, ambas superan el crecimiento de las exportaciones de aguacate en comparación con sus pronósticos originales.
