1883 – first USDA regulatory program: the Veterinary Division
1884 – renamed Bureau of Animal Industry
1912 – Plant Quarantine Act and Federal Horticultural Board (FHB) established
1928 – FHB divided into specific plant bureaus
1953 – animal/plant programs become part of Agricultural Research Service
1966 – Animal Welfare Act established
1971 – Animal and Plant Health Services formed
1972 – name changed to Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service
2000 – Plant Protection Act passed by Congress
2011 – Food Safety Modernization Act signed into law.
