AUSTIN, TX — I’m spoiled by my local retailer. H.E. Butt Co., San Antonio, and its Central Market banner does a heck of a job promoting in-season citrus every winter.
This year, I took my boys on a date to the grocery store (yes, they enjoyed it, I promise!) I let them pick out whatever they wanted and we went home and tried it.
And because it was Citrus Fest, we were trying wacky citrus including the ever-present pomelo and super-trendy Sumo citrus.
Uli, my 10-year-old, had an interesting observation about the merchandising plan at Central Market, which is laid out kind of like an Ikea. You are directed through the produce department then through meat, wine, candy, cheese, bakery, and deli. Everywhere you go, there’s something new and fun to buy.
At the end of the day, however, my old standard was shining through.
