SAN DIEGO, CA — I love a good Grocery Outlet BB #:154673 store check. From the first time I saw the store in the Seattle area about eight years ago to today, Grocery Outlet has grown tremendously.

The “treasure hunt” style deep discounter operates 428 stores in the U.S., more than 50% of which are in California. The company announced plans to expand in new markets, and plans to open 10 new stores in the Mid Atlantic this year, and grow by about 10% each year.

The produce department is bigger than what you’d see at other discounters, with a lot more variety and flexibility in merchandising than I see at a store like Aldi or Save A Lot. Grocery Outlet does a lot more opportunity buying than other stores, in my experience.

Being in California, so close to where so much produce is grown, also helps foster these programs in stores.
