If you’ve got some extra time in Montréal and want to see some retail, I highly suggest a stop by the Marché Jean-Talon.

It’s not on the Canadian Produce Marketing Association’s Retail Tour this time around, so you’ll have to make a special trip of your own.

Established in 1933, it’s one of the oldest public markets in Montréal. I’ve been several times over the years, most recently back in October when I was invited to speak to the World Banana Forum by Equifruit, a Quebec-based company that specializes in fairtrade bananas (and now pineapples, I hear?)

Visiting in the late summer/early fall is a special treat, with stalls overflowing with local garlic, peppers, carrots, apples and berries, but even out of season the displays are a great inspiration.
