WATSONVILLE, CA — This was a field tour like no other, partially because it seemed like everyone’s first field tour since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

I had a chance to join the buyer tours Sept. 15 to kick off the Organic Produce Summit in Monterey, with a stop at an organic raspberry ranch for Driscoll’s. We saw berries up close, and talked about the state of the berry industry, such as growing in substrate in pots rather than in dirt, and varieties that emphasize sweetness.

We then stopped at the Driscoll’s research facility to learn about berry breeding, and new trends in berry breeding, and taste the latest varieties being considered for market.

Stay tuned for more from the Organic Produce Summit!
