Exports totaled 150,417 tons worth $824 million in 2020, resulting in an increase of 22 percent in volume, but only 2 percent in value due to increased supplies driving prices down, as reported by Agraria.
Blueberry exports have had exceptional growth in the last decade, with expansion rates near 50 percent the last few years. Thanks to this, the fruit has become the second main agricultural export product of Peru.
At the same time, in 2019, Peru became the world’s largest blueberry supplier with a share of 23 percent.
During 2020, the main destinations were the U.S. with a 52 percent share, the Netherlands with a 27 percent share, and China (including Hong Kong) with an 11 percent share.
Blueberry exports to the U.S. totaled 77,18 tons worth $414 million, 11 percent less in volume and 10 percent less in value compared to 2019.
The Netherlands received 40,464 tons worth $217 million, 49 percent more in volume and 21 percent more in value compared to 2019. China received 17,027 tons worth $102 million, 32 percent more in volume and 17 percent more in value compared to 2019.
The main blueberry exporting companies in Peru were those that make up the Hortifrut group with a joint stake of 24 percent and Camposol S.A. with 16 percent.
