Peruvian mango export volume down, prices up in Q1 2024

In the first quarter of 2024, Peruvian mango exports reached 65,366 tons with a value of $188,640,000, according to Agraria, using data from Peru’s Service for Comprehensive Rural Development (SEDIR).

Mango exports in this campaign were drastically reduced by 68 percent due to high temperatures that affected the flowering of the plant. The figure represents just 32 percent of the 200,470 tons of mangoes that were sold abroad in 2023 in the quarter.

According to information from Adex Data Trade, processed by SEDIR, an institution that trains and provides technical support to small producers in Áncash, in the last campaign, Piura exported 41,190 tons with a value of $113,742,000, Áncash with 16,818 tons with a value of $57,366,000, and Lambayeque with 6,754 tons with a value of $15,598,000.

The Netherlands is the largest buyer of Peruvian mango with 28,846 tons, followed by the U.S. with 19,294 tons, the UK with 4,700 tons, Spain with 3,748 tons, Canada with 1,774 tons, South Korea with 1,571 tons, France with 1,282 tons, Chile with 1,198 tons, and other countries with 2,950 tons in the last campaign.

Although mango production was reduced, the lack of product benefited farmers who managed to have fruit, since the farm price of a kilo of Kent mango that is exported by air increased, while a kilo of mangos exported by sea also increased but less dramatically.
