Market News has also enhanced and expanded its reporting of organically grown commodities, including movement and market prices at three levels—retail, wholesale, and at shipping point. All of the information on organic products is aggregated and published in a daily report called the National Fruit and Vegetable Organic Summary.
Market News, along with other USDA agencies, has been working to segregate conventional and organic items at border crossings. Currently, only a few fruits and vegetables have separate Harmonized Tariff Codes for organic products, but additional codes will be added periodically in the coming months and years.
What’s Next?
The new Agricultural Act of 2014 has a number of items of importance to Market News, including the focus on local and regional food systems and supporting the organic sector. Market News is planning to work closely with individual states to greatly expand coverage of local and regional markets, such as farmers markets, farmer auctions, food hubs, and direct-to-retail/farm gate sales.
Market News is also in the process of building a new database, with full system deployment approximately two years away.
The “new house” will consolidate data from five Market News divisions into a single platform, improve data analytic and visualization tools, increase the timeframe and volume of data available to users, and create a platform for the new data from local and regional systems to be captured, stored, and made available to the public.
As it has for 100 years, USDA Market News is working to help you Compete Smarter.
