Company Press Release
On October 29, 2014, we at Shenandoah Growers voluntarily recalled one lot of conventional fresh-cut cilantro herbs because of the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
No illnesses have been reported to date, and no other products sold by Shenandoah Growers are affected.
This single lot of fresh-cut cilantro (465 plastic clamshells in total) was shipped to two customers in Maryland and Alabama (one retail distribution center and one wholesaler) on October 8 and October 9, 2014. Due to the perishability of fresh-cut cilantro, the recalled product is very likely no longer available in the marketplace.
The recall affects only two products, each bearing the lot code “15 273283” stamped on the front of the package:
• Shenandoah Growers brand conventional fresh-cut cilantro in 0.75 ounce plastic clamshells, and
• Giant brand conventional fresh-cut cilantro in 2.5 ounce plastic clamshells.
If you have purchased either of these products bearing the lot number indicated above and still have it in your possession, please dispose of it.
We initiated this voluntary recall after we were provided test results on October 28 that one of four routine samples taken on October 8 by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) revealed the presence of Salmonella. Concurrent testing of samples from the same lot conducted by an independent laboratory as part of our internal testing program contained no findings of contamination.
We have notified our customers who received the recalled fresh-cut cilantro clamshells. Although it is very unlikely the recalled product is still in the marketplace, we are issuing a voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution to minimize even the slightest risk to public health. Our primary concern is to continue to provide you, our valued customers, with safe, wholesome and quality products. Shenandoah Growers packaging facilities adhere to the highest standards of GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) benchmarked food safety and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
