President Donald Trump’s 25 percent tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico took effect this morning.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced retaliatory tariffs, targeting about $100 billion in U.S. exports to Canada. He said the tariffs will occur in two waves. The first wave will hit about $20 billion in products such as clothing, household appliances, and alcohol, and the second wave will be announced in a few weeks, Trudeau said.

Mexico likewise plans to announce retaliatory tariffs. President Claudia Sheinbaum said she will release the details at a rally on March 9.

Trump announced an additional 10 percent tariff on products from China. In response, China plans to impose extra tariffs of 15 percent and 10 percent on U.S. products, including agriculture, specifically naming fruits and vegetables.

The International Fresh Produce Association BB #:378962 plans to hold a virtual town hall March 6 to educate members on this evolving issue.

“IFPA is committed to advocating for policies that support fair and thriving international trade and will continue engaging with the administration, media, and industry,” the association said. “The latest round of tariffs is expected to drive up costs for both the fresh produce industry and consumers, further intensifying concerns over rising prices.”

“Given the essential role of fresh produce in supporting Americans’ health and nutrition, IFPA will support our members and allies as they seek exemptions for fresh products as the implementation process permits. Additionally, IFPA will continue providing the administration with data on the tariffs’ impact on the produce supply chain to inform policy decisions.”

IFPA provides updates on the tariffs on a dedicated page on its website.
