The college football calendar saves a spud-tacular matchup between New Year’s Day and the January 13 national championship game.
Of course, we’re speaking of the annual Famous Idaho Potato Bowl January 3 in Boise’s Albertsons Stadium. This year’s game features the Nevada Wolf Pack of the Mountain West Conference and the Ohio Bobcats from the Mid-American Conference.
The game’s kick-off is set for 1:30 Mountain time and is being broadcast on ESPN. Or if you’re close by, tickets are still available.
The Idaho Potato Commission BB #:162339 has been the title sponsor of the bowl since 2011 and last fall signed an extension to remain title sponsor through 2023.
“Our partnership with the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl has proven to be incredibly beneficial for the entire Idaho potato industry,” said Frank Muir, President & CEO of the Idaho Potato Commission, in October.
“It is an unmatched opportunity to support Idaho’s most important agricultural crop, which generates more than $4.5 billion in annual revenue and employs more than 30,000 people. Continuing our relationship with the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl was an easy decision and we look forward to being a part of college football’s bowl season for years to come.”
Nevada brings a 7-5 record into the game but will be without three defensive starters who are suspended for the game. Additionally, Nevada fired its defensive coaches at the end of the regular season and will have an interim defensive staff for the bowl game.
Ohio was 4-6 with two games remaining and overwhelmingly defeated Bowling Green and Akron to finish the season 6-6 and bowl eligible.
Greg Johnson is Director of Media Development for Blue Book Services and says watching the Potato Bowl during a work day is still considered work.
