SAN ANTONIO, TX—The fifth annual golf outing for Viva Fresh hosted a record number of golfers and a new vision for its beneficiary.

The tournament was held at the TPC golf club at the JW Marriott Hill Country Resort, which hosted the Valero Open in early April.

More than 250 golfers on two courses took part. Proceeds go to a newly-created Viva Fresh scholarship fund, said Dante Galeazzi, CEO of the Texas International Produce Association.

“We are going to start aiming to get more younger generations into the produce industry,” Galeazzi said, “Not just in the sales categories and production categories.”

Scholarships will be targeted to students looking to get into food safety, back office and more, he said.

Galeazzi said the amount raised hadn’t been finalized yet, but is expected to exceed last year’s $25,000 donation.
